When I presented the idea of Dailymap to one of my mentors, he asked me...
"How come no one else has already done this?"
He asked this in a challenging, stating that it's wise to assume that the conglomerates and corporates have already considered this idea. So why haven't they created it yet? This question really made me question what we were doing here.
"Is this a stupid idea?"
"Is this just a shot in the dark?"
"Are we being too naive?"
It took me quite a while of reflecting until I remembered, cui-bono...
"To whom is it a benefit?"
The whole business model of modern social media is built around getting as many users as possible and keeping them on the platform for as long as possible. Motivating an idea such as Dailymap, therefore, becomes impossible. Because it aims to get people out in the real world and off the platform. But the old way of thinking is dangerous...
Depression, anxiety and over-consumption are just some of the dreadful effects of modern social media. The never-ending scroll of memes, pimple-popping videos and cute babies is just too hard to resist and quickly turns into an addiction. But isolation is an effect of social media that is not talked about enough. A feeling of community, belonging and being part of something is regarded as one of the few key components of true happiness. Social media, despite its mission to connect humanity, has been proven several times over to cause the opposite of that... Loneliness, isolation and social anxiety. This makes people more inclined to develop mental health issues.
